Hard to say if it's fixable without much more data or a closer
look. As you say, it might not be worth the time or effort.
Yes, there are adapters available that might allow you to
remove the hard drive from the laptop and plug it into another
computer's usb port. Assuming that the hard drive is not the
problem itself, that seems like a very good alternative.
