You can try contacting the domain registrar, but in reality,
they'll need some compelling evidence that you have some kind
of rights to the domain.

You could wait until August, and have your domain registrar
snag it as soon as it expires.

Or, and perhaps the safest approach, is, in fact, to get a
lawyer involved.

But all the options are fairly unpleasant.
