I'm actually not aware of a VM approach that works that way.
The ones I'm familiar with all need to create their own disk
image in their own way.

However what you're suggesting certainly makes sense. I'd check
with VM providers like VMWare and Parallels and see if, perhaps,
they offer that as a feature somewhere.
