Don't know if I can put you out of your misery, I'm afraid.
It is possible to run both MSN messenger and Windows
Messenger at the same time. As well as a couple of other
IM clients that can talk to the MSN Messenger service.

So if I understand your scenario correction, this answer
doesn't help at all :-).
