First, if you've actually deleted the document (including
emptying the recycle bin), then the document isn't likely
to be found by accident.

I was able to clear the recent file list by going into Tools
Options in Word, turning off the option to display it, hitting
OK, and then go back into the options dialog to turn it back on.
