I can make this happen if Javascript is disabled when viewing the
MapQuest pages.
You can check your browser settings to make sure it's enabled, but
I believe that it is, by default. Another place to look is any firewall
that you might have installed - sometimes they also attempt to block
javascript in order to "protect" you.
