You should first and formost set up some kind of a backup,
even if you don't upgrade. What would happen if your hard disk
failed? Without backups, all would be lost.

Once you have a backup, you can use that to restore
files if any are lost in the upgrade.
Another approach is to burn the files to a CD-ROM, floppy
disks, or whatever other writable media you might have.
The Windows XP upgrade *shouldn't* cause you to lose any files
unless you tell it to format your hard disk, in which case
you'll lose everything.
But you should always have a backup, no matter what you do.
