I'd replace the hub with a wireless router. You may, or may not
need the routing functionality, but it can be turned off if you
don't need it.
Safety depends on what you mean by "safe", or what you're afraid
of. Wireless can, if configured improperly, be easily sniffed or
"listened to", or also easily hijacked so someone near by could
use your internet connection without your knowledge. If configured
properly (mostly by turning on WEP), you can bypass most of that.
Wired is almost always safer, but if wireless is done properly,
it's not a big difference.
