gateway@net is not a valid domain or email address.
The part after the @ should be something-dot-something,
like comcast.net or pugetsoundsoftware.com.
If you typoed and meant gateway.net that could be valid.
Regardless, there's never any guarantee that a bad email
address will bounce. Quite often they're simply silently
ignored (or, in some cases may take up to a week to bounce.)
