The router is probably providing DNS for yout network.
By that I mean the service that maps machine name to IP
address. When you remove the router, there's no way for
machines to locate each other.

You could build a more complicated network using an
additional router, or you could install a different
network protocol (like IPX or NETBEUI) that doesn't
rely on DNS.
