What you tried is possible, but there are problems that could
result.
My strong recommendation is to get a hub, or a router, and
connect the two using that. Which to get depends on what's
on the other end of that cable ... if there's a router there,
then a hub is appropriate. If it's a direct connection to the
internet, then a router would be called for.
