Without specific models it's hard to say, but I can certainly
make some educated guesses:
- speed: more expensive routers can typically handle more traffic.
- programability: "real" routers (the $600 & up kind) typically
have a complex ability for administrators to specify exacly how
traffic should be routed.
For the most part, those are not need in the home or other small
deployments, so the inexpensive routers work just fine. In larger
settings, or in settings with special needs, then higher end routers
may be called for.
