Because when you get your messages they are downloaded to the
computer you're using and removed from your mail server. So the
messages you download on one computer are not seen by the other
and vice versa.

There are a couple of solutions - one is to use IMAP instead
of POP3, the other is in the advanced settings for your account
you may be able to tell it to "leave messages on server". The
problem is that your ISP may have a limit as to how much you're
allowed to keep there, and as a result you could stop getting
mail at some point.

My solution is to standardize on one computer for email.
