will adding ram speed up startup?

If the machine runs acceptibly fast the rest of the time,
it's unlikely. It certainly can't hurt, but I'd be surprized
if it helped.

I would instead suspect spyware and other programs running
at startup that you simply don't need. I'd point you at these
