This is a toughie.

First, here's the KB article on that update:

It has uninstall instructions, so I think my first step would
be to uninstall it manually, ensuring that it's gone, and then
try the update again.

Failing that ... and this'll sound kinda odd ... if you can
borrow a video camera, or even a digital camera that can take
video, try to take a video of the screen as the DOS box comes
and goes. Then, look at the video frame-by-frame to see if you
can decipher any error messages that may help.

Finally ... it looks like this all applies to WMP 9 and
earlier. You could try upgrading to WMP 10.
